Manchester, CT., USA Representatives for the Manchester Regional Police & Fire Pipe Band (MRPF), confirmed today (March 25, 2009) that they are in final negotiations for their first ever European performance. While there has been much speculation and rumors of an upcoming performance in November, band representatives wanted to be sure there was enough support within the band before making any final announcements. At a recent rehearsal in South Windsor, exuberant band members solidified their feelings on the trip by overwhelming numbers. Band President Kevin Kerchaert estimates that “we have at least 33 folks who are committed to this trip and a number of newer members are interested in getting more details”.
In September 2008, the band hosted a performance by the Scottish super group, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. During that concert, the MRPF played for an exhibition of several Scottish Drum Majors, one of whom tutors MRPF Drum Major Ox Gara. As a result of that interaction (and prior experiences) with the MRPF, D/M Billy Jordan – Scotland, recommended the MRPF to the organizers of the Fulda Military Tatttoo. This marks the first time a United States based Pipe Band will perform at Fulda. While the fine details are being worked out, the band is confident that it can handle the numerous new pieces of music which must be mastered over the next 5 months.
Scheduled for three performances over a two day period, the concerts are preceded by two days of intensive drills & rehearsals to make sure the bands perform up to the high standards expected by European audiences.
While the bulk of the expenses incurred in Germany will be borne by the Fulda Tattoo, the band must pay it’s own airfare and transportation costs within the US. For the number of folks who will be involved and the type of equipment that must be moved, this could be a very costly endeavor. The band is interested in talking to any firms that might be interested in sponsoring the band in this historic opportunity.
